A sinkhole that opened Sunday night in far north Colorado Springs damaged a road and caused traffic delays, the Colorado Springs Police Department said.

Police helped close North Union Boulevard between Alberta Falls Way and Tochal Drive – about two miles southeast of Pine Creek High School – around 6 p.m. Sunday after “the little sinkhole widened and quickly engulfed a large part of the intersection, ”police said.

Colorado Springs Utilities responded to the sinkhole to assess whether there was a main water main leak or a ruptured storm water main, but no leaks were found, Jennifer Kemp said on Monday, door -speak of the agency.

A private developer, La Plata Communities, which owns the road, took over the sinkhole investigation and repairs on Monday.

Communities in La Plata did not immediately respond to questions about the cause of the sinkhole or the time frame for repairs.

It is the second sinkhole to appear in the city in the past week, in addition to two ruptured water pipes. Kemp said the outages are isolated incidents and with 1,600 miles of water service infrastructure, clusters of outages sometimes occur.

Here is a list of sinkholes and waterline ruptures in the city over the past week:

Garden of the Gods Route

Last Tuesday, a water pipe ruptured and sank on Garden of the Gods Road, causing the closure of a section of the road between North Chestnut Street and Rusina Road.

About 50 feet of the main was replaced, which included a slight expansion of the project eastward after crews determined that an eight-foot section also needed to be replaced due to structural integrity issues, a said Kemp.

The westbound lanes of Garden of the Gods Road reopened on Saturday. The rest of the road is expected to reopen by mid-week.

The underlying cause of the water line rupture is still under investigation, said Ted Skroback, spokesperson for Colorado Springs Utilities.

Baymont by Wyndham

A water pipe that feeds the Baymont by Wyndham on Garden of the Gods Road burst before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, trapping a vehicle in a sinkhole outside the hotel entrance.

The car was towed out of the sinkhole and Colorado Springs Utilities shut down a city water main that supplied the private line, Skroback said.

Colorado Springs Utilities said there was no evidence the rupture was related to the ruptured water main west of Interstate 25, Kemp said.

The water line was repaired and put into service just before 7 p.m. Friday.

Cheyenne Meadows Park

A water line ruptured around 8:30 a.m. on Friday near Strawberry Field Grove and Suncrest Way.

Crews responded to the water line leak, shut off the water and discovered a ruptured 8-inch-diameter pipe, said Eric Isaacson, spokesperson for Colorado Springs Utilities.

Eight utility customers were cut off from the water for several hours.

The pipe and road were repaired and the water was restored the same day, Skroback said.

The cause of the rupture is still under investigation, Skroback said.
