In loving memory of Wayne E. Dunbar: 1925-2022

Wayne E. Dunbar, 96, died Dec. 27, 2021, in Chehalis. He was born and raised near Galesburg, Illinois. Still industrious, he sought odd jobs to help the family when his father died in infancy. Prior to his induction into the United States Navy during World War II, he met the love of his life, Barbara Carr. After completing his military enlistment, he returned to Illinois and married her. In October 1949, with his wife and young children, he moved to Lakewood. Wayne joined the Lakewood Fire Department and got a job at the new Lakewood Water District. His employment there lasted 34 years and he retired after serving as superintendent for several years. He moved to Salkum, Washington to pursue his passion for rainbow trout fishing and RVing across the states. Her greatest love was her family and lending a helping hand to help them and her many friends. Some of her fondest memories were hosting family gatherings and gathering around the bonfire to share stories. He was an avid storyteller. One of his favorite memories was when he was young riding in the back seat of the family sedan with his mother behind the wheel, carrying moonshine for the “old man” between Peoria and Cicero. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, 73, and sons Michael and James. He is survived by Patricia (Terry) Wheaton, Nancee (Darrell) Alvord, his daughter-in-law Linda Dunbar, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at Mountain View Cemetery on January 23, 2022 at 1:30 p.m.
