Gas theft is the hot new crime spreading across Illinois

When I talk about gas theft, I’m not talking about people giving up paying at the pump, I’m talking about thieves literally drilling holes in gas tanks to steal fuel.

Illinois police departments warn drivers of rising gasoline thefts

According to an article on wgntv.comMidwest police departments are warning residents of an increase in gas theft, but the way thieves steal gas will cost you more than just a tank of fuel.

AAA says that since most newer vehicles have a feature that prevents tipping of the gas tank and siphoning fuel from the tank, thieves are literally drilling holes under your car to get the gas. So not only do you run out of gas, you know how to replace the entire gas tank, which will be even more expensive.

How to protect against gasoline theft

We may not be able to protect ourselves from high gas prices, but there are things we can do to protect our vehicles from being drilled by thieves. Obviously, the best way to prevent gas theft is to park your car in the garage every night, but that’s not an option for everyone, so here are a few other things you can do to prevent it. fuel theft according to AAA;

  • If possible, park in a fenced parking lot or other hard-to-reach place.
